This CD’s predominantly acoustic mix provides a pleasant and intimate context for the lyrics. Several notably artistic devices, creating unusual sonic effects, occur in several tracks and should cause listeners to sit up and take notice. The project’s musical highlights include Amen’s distinctive voice, a particularly pleasant violin which lends its color to some of the most memorable tunes like “Fortress” and “Anaheim,” and an interesting use of the pedal steel guitar.

The ninth track, “Daddy,” carries the CD away from its acoustic moorings, introducing a slightly grungy lead guitar and a sudden outburst of horns to accompany the cryptic lyric. This stylistic variation occurs at the three quarters mark which points out the only real weakness of the CD. There is a measure of sameness that comes across after a certain amount of acoustic guitar accompanying a vocal line contoured around a limited chordal structure. More songs like “Daddy” and “Wild Dogs And Ostriches” would serve to strengthen the overall appeal of the project.

Nothing separates at 3:21 AM,
everything runs together,
an egg with a broken yolk,
body and brain refusing rest,
wander like a phantom,
walking on egg shells through
a relentless, ticking house.
Two more hours and the
alarm will bring a new day
to this day without end
and the two will become one
cracked egg with a double yoke,
plowing the fields of time
together, step by faithful step,
encouraged along by the crack
of the plowman’s whip.

Lonnie Gots Big Eyes Too - from the book "Reading The Waters" by Ken Mowery

(The End OF Miss Whadjadoo Part 3)

Lonnie’s eyes can get
big ‘cause I seen them
big as that spooky ol’
moon shinin’ through
them bare trees that night
they’s big as them eyes on
miss big eyes herself but only
his eyes look big in a gooder
sort a way ain’t like hers is
mean an’ all hurtful like she
gonna set yo head on fire
with them eyes

they sure ‘nough got big
when Lonnie drags her into
that car an’ me sittin’ there
beside her tryin’ look
mean too but I ain’t got the
killer look says Lonnie so I
mostly try watchin’ the road

Lonnie now he real good at
lookin’ an’ talkin’ mean
an’ he done told me he do
all the talkin’ once we get
her in the car ‘cept I don’t
think he knows so much ‘bout
drivin’ no car ‘cause he be
drivin’ all crazy like he can’t
keep it goin’ straight or somethin’

I think miss big eyes think that too
‘cause her eyes ‘bout come
poppin’ out couple times
‘fore we make it out to
8 mile bridge south a town
where Lonnie stops the car
real quick like an’ he jumps
out starts yellin’ real mean
get out the car woman
get yo ugly self out the car
scarred me real bad ‘cause
I thought he’s yellin’ at me

when I open the door miss
big eyes pushes me out the way
starts runnin’ like a spooked
mule screamin’ with that
real high voice of hers that
always makes people mad
all the time

Lonnie told me he think
somebody gonna shut that
woman up someday
like they be doin’ somethin’
bad to her but it don’t bother
me none no how ‘cause I be
thinkin’ all the time how I
might cut her or somethin’
but on that night she was
screamin’ so loud an’ runnin’

hadn’ t been for that things
might been different cause that
screamin’ and runnin’ is
somethin’ Lonnie can’t stand
no how not since he got back
from fightin’ an’ I think
most folks knows not to
provoke him like that
‘cept miss whadjadoo
she don’t know nothin’ ‘bout
nobody but her own self

we takes care of her I reckon
cause all I know is the two a
them goes runnin’ to the
woods an’ I be chasin’ after
next thing I know Lonnie be
sayin’ we got to haul her
back up the road so we
can dump her in the river
then bury that money box
‘side the road where ain’t
nobody gonna think to be
lookin’ for it ‘cause Lonnie
he done already give it lots
a thought how to get away
with stealin’ that money

‘cept I think we wasn’t
s’pose to be killin’ nobody
we jes wanted the money
but turns out that miss big eyes
got a big screamin’ mouth
an’ like Lonnie done said
she oughts to know not to
do no screamin’ like that
‘round a man jes got
back from fightin’ no how
